It turned out to be a cosy sewing afternoon. First we met in the shop, where she chose the leather fabric pieces. Then our sewing date was there. She wanted me to sew, but after a little while she took the lead and did all the rest by herself.

This summer M got 15! My boyfriend and I decided that a little couch on her bedroom would be fun for a teen like her. The couch measures 150 x 70 cm.

In the office I'm working with a (for me) new software program and the drawing of this couch is a very first result. The couch is simply made of birch plywood panels, that are joining in miter angles.

The wooden base was made by my boyfriend, who screwed the panels in advance. These screws we later removed and replaced by massive wooden rods.

The cushions are custom made, but the covers are made by me. The making appeared more difficult than I had in mind. I used Kvadrat samples for the sides, the rest is made of a warm grey wool fabric with a felted look. Some samples appeared too thick for the corners, but because of timepressure I couldn't change the composition anymore. Better corners are something to improve next time.
The covers have long zippers, so they can be cleaned once in a while. Tip is to make two zippers in line, in order to get the zipper ends in the middle of the cushion and invisible from the sides.

We didn't make it to finish the couch in time. Last week I finally had time to lacquer it with a super mat paint called Skylt. The result is that you can't believe it's painted. It has a very natural look, that M very much preferred.
On the first picture you see the couch installed in her room, where she is able to use a soft pillow in the corner. Welcome to the teen lointerer!lightbluegreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15725573331908175593noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6152357924336231309.post-11731773895758247662016-09-21T22:44:00.001+02:002016-09-21T22:48:05.609+02:00For KlaarBirthday twin girl next door invited L for her slumber party. These covers, made of Petit Pan oilcloth, I made for M's schoolbooks and like new they will be used next year again, as well as the years after.
This simple tutorial is handy to use. I give you some extra tips:

add some scotch tape at the bottom of your sewer foot when you work with oilcloth

you will use tape instead of pins, but remove the tape just before sewing

add 4 cm for top and bottom instead of 2,5 cm.

Hope to inspire you in this covering time of the year!lightbluegreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15725573331908175593noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6152357924336231309.post-25057232566432398242016-06-26T00:35:00.000+02:002016-06-26T15:21:28.021+02:00Daughter's turnLast May holiday, my eldest daughter M and I spent some quality time together when the two of us had the house for ourselves. M was very, no extremely determined to make a bag. Just a second schoolbag, not at all necessary, but really necessary to be made right away. It became a cosy three-days mother-daughter project, with the daughter in the lead and mom just following.
The blue denim was found in mom's fabric stock, as well as a sturdy mustard yellow denim-like fabric for the lining. She knew exactly which kind and which color leather to chose. The horse girl had a saddle in mind.

The lining and the waterproof extra layer that she wanted to be added were easily made, but the leather details were not. What a joy to have a motivated co-worker along. Motivation does it all! Whenever things had to be done over and over again, no problem for her! She did it with patience, till the late night hours. For me it was one of the hardest projects ever, but it was great to do it together! And with together I mean, that I did the roadmapping and the leather cutting, and M did the rest.
By now I can tell you that she is using this bag every day. Schoolmates couldn't believe that it was self-made. M prepared an answer to this: by topstitching her name on the shoulder strap she convinces all disbelievers.
Searching at the local fabric store, the www and even at our local museum with a temporary fashion exhibition and great fabric sale. With no result. So in the end my very own fabric stock was newly explored - what an idea ;) - and with success! These two grey and green all time beauties of Nani Iro I found, but were sadly both to small... So I decided to combine them.
But again: with success! Happy to have that upper little bird on the right place on her breast.
Nearly no fabric was left. As a gift, this dress forced me to teach myself how to join patterned fabric.
Long time ago I made these series of photo books for M. Now L, who got 10, was really longing for a book with her pictures as well. So this was one of her birthday gifts. Such a joy to make! And in no time this time. I'm becoming an expert ;).
Because the book is about her being a baby, I thought a little rose for the inside of the cover would suit.lightbluegreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15725573331908175593noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6152357924336231309.post-51592138996179546392016-02-11T19:20:00.001+01:002016-02-12T01:22:46.037+01:00Being a mill

Remember this post about my eldest being the Erasmus bridge? Look at my youngest daughter now, being a mill during carnival at school and the way back home by metro! One of the themes was Holland. She wanted to be this herself and she worked so hard to finish the mill in time. Lucky with a father like F, who made the vanes being able to turn around. Using a bicycle hub. Made it all together a great week!
(Btw, funny that I suddenly discovered this behind the stage. Apparently still laying around in the school's attic.)lightbluegreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15725573331908175593noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6152357924336231309.post-21502125960401325922016-01-24T11:21:00.000+01:002016-02-11T15:50:37.367+01:00Let's drink together

Last week I invited my colleagues in the local bar to have a drink on my goodbye. Not a voluntary goodbye, so cutting my visiting cards into drink vouchers was sort of therapeutically.
My daughter L knows what she wants. Always. The best part of her self-confidence is that, after giving a present where she's longing for, we are sure that she will enjoy it a lot.
This winter she is begging for - as we call them - highwalkers. Officially they are called peg stilts. We did some research where to get these, like here and at the local circusschool. But way too expensive, we thought. So my boyfriend F decided to make the stilts himself, with a little help of this. Lucky L that he wanted her to try them on to make them perfect. Imagine that the shoes that she is wearing are fixed to the steps. And good to know is that it just took her some minutes to walk away.
Already days before her birthday she is walking around with her present. And she loves it! In the house with all our stairs she is going up and down and is discovering new things in the upper parts of our cabinets. And dust ;). And in the street suddenly she can look over fences and inspects the roofs of electricity houses and so on. These days she is wearing the stilts all day long, even during watching TV. Real fun!
Orders to my boyfriend can be made in the comments ;).lightbluegreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15725573331908175593noreply@blogger.com26tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6152357924336231309.post-13515261464533328662016-01-02T22:43:00.000+01:002016-01-02T22:53:45.557+01:0010!Since L is going to be 10 next week, invitations had to be made for her party. L has planned to go jumping with her friends. So she made small matching drawings, that I made even smaller.
Although there's few nowadays, I do my best to keep you posted when there is something coming out of my hands. The good news is that at the very moment some projects are in the making.
The last three years she had only one teacher. Next week she will have to get used to her new teacher for the following 3 years. Often some problems occur with changes in L's system, so I'm extra awaken.
I made this little baby gift. Look for more great doudou's at the blog of our doudou queen. She made like 30 pieces. This one is my very first :). When I had my birthday this year, I decided to organize a little party. I made a plan of how my friends would stay in our living and decided that some side tables were missing. To avoid spending a lot of money, I came up with the idea of using the two baskets, that we use as storage for yarn etcetera. Storage is still in function, while two aluminium Moroccan trays were added on top. I did some effort to paint them nicely.
During my search for the right trays I was lucky: I measured the diameter of the baskets, which was 46 cm exactly. In the Moroccan shop I found these trays with a sticker on them, mentioning 46 cm :).lightbluegreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15725573331908175593noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6152357924336231309.post-39726626399069352052015-04-07T22:11:00.001+02:002015-04-07T22:11:45.299+02:00Magpie

Almost a month ago L turned 9. Our house is perfect suitable for a Ganzenbord (or the Game of Goose or Goose board) birthday party, we thought. We have so many stairs and surprising nooks and crannies. The idea is that all around the house are numbers, from basement till the upper room. We made 63 yellow envelopes, some of which are yellow bags. L helped a lot and loved to write the numbers. Inside the envelopes the kids found an instruction to do or make or guess or play or collect something. Apart from the instruction they found some supplies as well inside the bags, like a tapeline or some goodies. For this birthday party L had to invite eight friends, to be able to make three groups of three kids. With one dice for each group off they went to be occupied for many hours. The kids loved it, it was a big hit! And of course especially our basement filled with clutter was the most popular place to be.
Is 'Ganzenbord', or the Game of Goose or Goose board, known all over the world? This game we played with eight friends of L, that she invited on her birthday party. How I will tell you next time (and if you, Dutch speaking blog readers, are interested: I will giveaway this birthday party, so please come back later!).
Together with L we made these invitations, with all we had already around. We even made the yellow dots ourselves. Just because it was raining outside.lightbluegreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15725573331908175593noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6152357924336231309.post-85466244065061134152015-01-19T09:16:00.000+01:002015-01-19T09:16:57.486+01:00Melted

When I saw the doll that a friend had made for her daughter, I melted. These days sitting on the couch, doing some crochet and avoiding complex thinking, are best for me. But I'm not experienced in crochet at all. Apparently that doesn't matter with this free pattern. You could give it a try too! And mind the other ones, that are great as well! Everyone who knows Ravelry, knows these dolls. But I didn't untill now...
Some weeks ago I was attending a dentist visit with my youngest, and while waiting I was flipping through a magazine. When my eyes fell on the picture above, I knew all of a sudden how L's birthday dress would be. And this idea was there to stay; the egg hàd to come out soon after.

At first I was thinking about the fabric. It had to be cotton and stepped or at least have some embossment. As our fabric shop only sells polyester lining fabrics, I considered to buy and use this coverlet of Ikea. Finally I decided to make the stepped cotton fabric myself, and was able to choose color, thread and topstitch.
A relatively thin fiberfill layer was added between lining and outer fabric. I first cut the pattern pieces, as used before and found in this book, and then topstitched horizontal in the color of the fabric and on 60° with yellow thread.

The circular skirt I turned inside out to avoid a seam at the bottom of the skirt. After finishing the body piece, I measured it's bottom line to be sure about the size of the circle I had to cut out of the skirt. How to make the cap sleeves I found as well on Griet's blog.
For the accent edging I chose yellow and a salmon pink in the color of L's cheeks. As you can see I wanted to avoid a shoulder seam in the yellow part of the edge.
About the topstitching a final note: my head wasn't able to finish this laborious job. I decided to decrease the number of yellow lines of the skirt. And I was happy about that: the handmade look of the fabric is more obvious now and I like the change of embossment, something you might not see at once, but only when you look closely. This kind of perception on different scales is my cup of tea.

2015 has begun. That deserves an overview of the last year of Lightbluegrey!
At the same time, let's be open-hearted: the second half of last year I got ill and I won't be back at work soon either. The collage shows that the level of productivity on my blog wasn't that high. I'm happy to tell that recently something came out of my hands again, and that made me happy.
But there are doubts. Doubts about blogging. Doubts about showing things to the world or keeping them privately. After all those years I have doubts about sharing things and my longing for approval. Do I need this?
Anyway, as I'm not able right now to decide to quit or not, I will bother you with some blog news soon :).
Thanks for visiting my blog in 2014. Jil, our sweet girl next door, let me know that she would love to get a drawstring bag in the fabric of the pencil case that I made for her two years ago. This Heather Bailey fabric was used long before for the tree in M's bedroom.
Looking at my remnants stock it appeared that I had to do my best. Remnants were there, but there was little left and their shape was strange.
This fact brought me to this free formed patchwork. Remnants just came together as I found them. Their shape remained. Made it more special to make this easy project (following this tuto; thanks Mieke).

The teacher drew a typical model with a small flap on the blackboard. Not enough inspiring to me if I may say. So I made a different one.... Works perfect :).lightbluegreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15725573331908175593noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6152357924336231309.post-18656733825153548672014-09-27T14:15:00.000+02:002014-09-27T16:51:42.469+02:00Heart's desireThis one is an oldy. I mean, I made it already in January of this year. Meant for L's birthday, but only finished recently! F fixed the frame with wheels and (very important!) pull out handle. Sometimes it just takes long...
For years already L was begging for it: a roller case. I don't know where her desire comes from, as we don't have one and simply love our backpacks. I refused to buy one for her before because none of us likes the available ones with awful pictures of Walt Disney, Pokemon or what so ever. A solution that came up: make one myself.

You'll recognize parts here (thanks Debora!) and here, but after this post my hands were really itching (thanks Riet, for the inspiration!). The significant parts, wheels and handle, come from a cheap Marktplaats (Dutch eBay) buy. I just replaced the ugly case. 'Just' turned to be quite a job. I think this thing was the hardest ever. It just didn't come out of my hands like that and I had to redo about every part of it. I declared myself for crazy several times, but at the same time I very much enjoyed making it. I even laughed when I discovered late at night that I made the whole thing upside down (so zippered pocket and text were wrong). The embroidered words (like done here long time ago) are going to be typical I believe...

Denim was choosen for the outside, a sweet Petit Pan fabric for the inside. The color of the piping I so love! It's super bright as I noticed before; I can't even catch it by camera. Both inner and outer fabrics were stiffened with the most stiff fusible woven layer that I could find. But in the end the case still wasn't hard enough. So finally a strip made of polystyrene panel for the corners attached to foam board for the sides had to be added between the layers. Still I'm not satisfied. Who wants to tell me the secret of all those super hard looking little cases made by you, Belgian bloggers? Although I'm pretty sure I won't make another one...

In the early morning in January L found only one present on her birthday table. After unwrapping she discovered in every pocket some more (like my iPhone!). Among them this toiletry bag.

That's why she got two kittens today, one for her and one for her sister. Kittens that didn't agree with my initial present idea to make a bag for M with the kittens inside.
Last week M was that enthousiastic about this bag, that I decided to make another one for her. She might be kind of young for a leather bag like this, but on the other hand she will be going to secondary school after summer and she's no more a little kid!
This bag is a sum of the bags I made before. I learn each time and now I'm satisfied with the result. There was no more left of the beautiful cotton straps I bought in Paris and that you saw before, so these leather straps came in.
